Attendance at language school is a compulsory part of the au pair visa program. The family will pay toward the cost of the language school. Families will want you to speak English to their children. If requested, the host parents will speak German to the au pair to help them learn the language. Australian and New Zealand passport holders enter Germany on the 90 day holiday visa. Your au pair visa is applied for once you are with the host family. You will be assisted in preparing for this process to obtain your au pair visa by JCR’s associate and the host family in Germany. Prior to leaving, JCR will also provide a list of basic vocabulary required for the visa interview, and the host family will help you to learn enough to talk to the immigration people. The process is very straight forward and no applicant has ever yet been refused the visa. If you are from any other country, please let us know and we will advise if the same provision applies to you. If not, to be granted an au pair visa you must be able to show proof of being able to understand and speak Germany to level 1A. A copy of a certificate showing that you have studied to this level [preferably with the Goethe Institute] must be sent in with your application. If you have studied German at secondary or tertiary level education send proof with application. If you speak German we will advise how to show proof.
